After his playing days, he worked as a scout and became the first African American coach in Major League Baseball. During his career, he played for the Memphis Red Sox (1937) and the Kansas City Monarchs (1938–1943, 1946–1948) and was a 2 time All-Star (1942–1943) and a Negro World Series champion (1942).
