1934-36 Batter-Up Series Card of Lefty Grove of Boston (HOF 1947)

Here is a baseball card from the Batter-Up series that were produced from 1934 until 1936. The 1934 Batter-Up baseball set, manufactured by National Chicle, consists of 192 cards issued over a three-year period. Cards #1-80 measure 2-3/8” by 3-1/4”, while the remaining #81-192 measure 2-3/8” by 3”. Each card is printed in black-and-white or varying colors with an in-action player photograph in the center of the die-cut, which allowed collectors to fold the card within the perforation to stand the cards upright without outside support. Near the bottom of each is a white box with "Batter-Up”, the player’s name, team and position printed inside. Also printed at or near the bottom left corner of each card in the number designation prints as "No. 1”, "No. 57”, "No. 149”, etc. This one depicts Lefty Grove who was playing for the Boston Red Sox and is card #3. Robert Moses "Lefty" Grove (March 6, 1900 – May 22, 1975) was an American professional baseball pitcher. Grove played for the Philadelphia Athletics (1925–1933) and the Boston Red Sox (1934–1941). He was a 6 time All-Star (1933, 1935–1939), a 2 time World Series champion (1929, 1930), was the AL MVP (1931) and a 2 time Triple Crown (1930, 1931) and a 4 time AL wins leader (1928, 1930, 1931, 1933). He was also a 9 time AL ERA leader (1926, 1929–1932, 1935, 1936, 1938, 1939) and a 7 time AL strikeout leader (1925–1931). He was honored with the Philadelphia Baseball Wall of Fame, Athletics Hall of Fame and the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame and was a member of the Major League Baseball All-Century Team. This one is missing the top portion that folded over but it still displays well as you can see.
